A South London councillor has stepped down after facing serious abuse allegations. The resignation comes as scrutiny increases over her ties to a controversial church.

Lewisham: A Labour councillor has resigned from her cabinet position. Kim Powell, who also works at a church, faced serious abuse allegations from former members.
Mayor Brenda Dacres announced the resignation on February 3. She thanked Powell for her service since 2021 and wished her well.
Opposition councillor Hau-Yu Tam said it was the right move. However, he urged Powell to apologize for the situation.
Powell’s role at the United Church of the Kingdom of God has raised eyebrows. There have been claims of exploitation and abuse linked to the church.
At a recent council meeting, Tam pressed Dacres to apologize for involving the church in a council event. Dacres denied any relationship with the church.
Despite the allegations, Lewisham Council stated they had no safeguarding concerns about the church. Powell maintains her council work is separate from her church role.
In 2022, former church members made serious allegations against UCKG. The church has denied these claims, saying former members spread hate online.
Powell will continue to serve as a councillor for Hither Green. Cllr Ese Erheriene will take over her cabinet role.
On February 5, Tam reiterated the need for an apology from Powell. He believes her resignation is linked to the ongoing UCKG scandal.
Another councillor, Chris Barnham, also resigned recently. He expressed pride in his service, noting improvements in local schools.
Powell has not yet commented on her resignation.
