South East London: The Fairer Schools Index has just released its rankings, and it’s pretty exciting! This index highlights 50 of the best schools in the country where teachers are really making a difference.
In London, 17 schools made the cut, including St Thomas the Apostle College in Southwark and Ark Greenwich Free School in Greenwich. It’s great to see local schools getting recognized!
The list was put together by looking at various factors like student demographics, ethnicity, and levels of deprivation. They also used performance data to keep things fair and unbiased.
Basically, the index compares the GCSE results of students who started at the same level up to Key Stage 2, similar to how the government creates league tables.
So, here’s the scoop on the South East London schools that made the list this year:
St Thomas the Apostle College, Southwark
This school ranked fifth in London and tenth in the country, jumping up 14 places! It’s an all-boys college that focuses on creating a supportive environment for learning.
They offer a whopping 35 subjects, from art to chemistry and French. Plus, they got an Outstanding rating from Ofsted last November, which is no small feat!
Ark Greenwich Free School, Greenwich
Next up is Ark Greenwich Free School, which came in at number 18, making it the ninth highest in London. They also received an Outstanding rating from Ofsted after their inspection in July 2023.
The school prides itself on an “unashamedly academic” curriculum, teaching 17 subjects. Students can even dive into Photography, Computer Science, and Statistics starting in Year 9!
Sacred Heart Catholic School, Southwark
Last but not least, Sacred Heart Catholic School ranked number 20, placing it tenth in London. This school has a strong pass rate of 74% and an impressive 91% pass rate for English and Maths.
They offer a variety of subjects, including Photography and Criminology, and 85% of students achieve A Level grades between A* and C. Talk about success!
