Nottingham: The city is rolling out new traffic cameras to catch unsafe drivers. These cameras will focus on areas near Nottingham Trent University and the Victoria Embankment.

The council got new powers in 2023 to enforce traffic rules. They can now issue fines up to £70 for certain offenses. They’re using £600,000 from bus lane fines to fund this project.

The first two cameras will go live on February 10. They’ll monitor roads that should be pedestrian-only. One camera will be at the Victoria Embankment, near the war memorial.

Previously, the council put up bollards to block cars, but those will be taken down now that the cameras are in place. This change aims to reduce traffic and make the area safer.

Back in 2020, the council started efforts to limit traffic on the Victoria Embankment. They used government funds to close the road to cars, promoting walking and cycling during the pandemic.

They found that this move cut down 4,000 car journeys a day. The second camera will be on Shakespeare Street, near the Boots Library. For the first six months, drivers will get warning letters for violations.

After that, they’ll face a £70 fine, which drops to £35 if paid within 21 days. All fines collected will go back into maintaining the cameras and improving the roads.

Neghat Khan, the council leader, expressed excitement about the new cameras. She said they aim to make roads safer and hold drivers accountable for their actions.

Eventually, more cameras will be added to stop U-turns and right turns in other busy areas. This is all part of Nottingham’s plan to improve road safety for everyone.
