London: So, Romain Esse is about to have his medical with Crystal Palace on Friday. It looks like he’s making a big move from Millwall, right across South London.
The Eagles really want him and made him a top priority this winter. They’re jumping in early to snag him before his summer release clause kicks in. It’s a smart move to beat out other Premier League teams.
Teams like Bournemouth and Newcastle were also eyeing him, so Palace had to act fast. You know how it is in football; if you snooze, you lose!
Dougie Freedman, the sporting director for Palace, was seen checking out Esse before the January window opened. It’s clear they’ve had their eyes on him for a while.
Interestingly, Millwall’s coach Alex Neil didn’t include Esse in the squad for their FA Cup match against Dagenham & Redbridge on Monday. Maybe they knew something was up!
Esse has been doing well this season, making 23 appearances in the Championship and contributing to five goals. Not too shabby for a 19-year-old!
Millwall is set to make a nice profit from this deal, with a record fee of £14.5 million and a sell-on clause included. They’re definitely cashing in!
Once Esse’s deal is wrapped up, Palace will shift their focus to finding a left wing-back. Rumor has it they might bring back El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague. He’s versatile and can play both defensively and offensively.
