The Metropolitan Police have blocked a pro-Palestine protest near a synagogue in London to prevent disruption during Shabbat services
Protesters were planning to meet outside the BBC’s Broadcasting House before marching to Whitehall. However, the police decided to impose restrictions under the Public Order Act to avoid any serious disruption to the synagogue.
They mentioned that they considered the views of local community members and businesses, especially those connected to the synagogue nearby. Earlier, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) was asked to change their plans to prevent any issues for worshippers.
In response, the PSC expressed strong disapproval of the police’s actions, stating that their marches are not a threat to Jewish people. They pointed out that there have been no incidents linked to their previous protests.
Commander Adam Slonecki, overseeing the police operation, noted that the PSC refused to adjust their plans, leaving the police with no choice but to act. He emphasized the need to balance the right to protest with the community’s right to go about their lives without disruption.
Slonecki also mentioned that the police have been using their powers more frequently since October 2023, especially considering the ongoing protests often coincide with Saturdays and nearby synagogues.
He reassured that the decision was made based on careful consideration and not influenced by outside pressures, despite some media speculation about political letters received regarding the protest.
