London: Knife crime has been a big issue, but things are changing. Last year, the number of fatal stabbings dropped to the lowest level in years. This is great news!

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is really focused on helping young people. His team is working with teens in hospitals and even in police custody. They want to steer them away from violence.

Lib Peck, who leads the Violence Reduction Unit, shared that they’re building relationships with vulnerable youth. They aim to prevent these kids from getting involved in gangs.

She mentioned they’re working in 11 areas of London that struggle the most with violence. They’re also training parents to help keep their kids safe.

Last year, there were only 12 teenage homicides in London, the lowest since 2012. Overall homicides were also down, with 105 reported, the fewest since 2014.

Peck explained that they invest in youth workers at hospitals. When a young person comes in after being hurt, it’s a chance to talk about their future. They call it a “teachable moment.”

They also have youth workers in police custody. When kids are alone in a cell, they often reflect on their choices. It’s a tough moment, but it can lead to change.

The Mayor’s initiative, called the New Deal for Young People, has helped over 100,000 disadvantaged youth. More than 150 organizations are involved in providing support.

Khan is proud of the progress but knows there’s more to do. He wants to ensure every young person in London has the chance to thrive and stay safe.
