Lucy Jones shines in Surrey Cross-Country League, marking her England selection with a significant victory

Guildford: This past Saturday, the Surrey Cross-Country League was buzzing with excitement. The weather was a mix of frozen ground and muddy puddles, making it quite the challenge for the runners.
Lucy Jones, a member of Herne Hill Harriers, really stole the show. She not only celebrated her selection to race for England but also won her Division 1 race by a whopping 70 seconds. Talk about a way to make a statement!
Her training partner, Sophie Tooley, also had a great day, finishing strong to secure a 1-2 finish for their team. Tooley’s recent selection for the Surrey team added to the excitement, especially after her impressive performance the week before.
Jones is gearing up for her first senior race with the England team in Belgium later this month. It’s a big step for her, and she’s definitely on a roll!
The team had solid support, with four other women from Herne Hill finishing in the top 20. It’s great to see such talent coming together.
Meanwhile, the South of England indoor championships were happening at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre. Herne Hill had a strong showing there too, with several girls bringing home medals.
Jasmine Nkoso, just 15, shone in the shot put, achieving a personal best throw. Ella Rennie also impressed with her performances in the sprints, snagging medals in both the 60m and 200m.
In Valencia, a few Herne Hill athletes took on the fastest 10km road race in the world. Georgie Grgec, a New Zealand team member, ran an impressive time, while others also clocked in some solid performances.
Back in Surrey, the young athletes were busy too, with the U13 boys and girls putting in strong efforts. It’s exciting to see the next generation stepping up!
The senior men’s team finished fifth, with Sam Bramwell making a strong return after injury. It’s clear that the team is filled with young talent, ready to take on the competition.
Overall, it was a fantastic weekend for Herne Hill Harriers, showcasing their talent and determination across various events.
