Hackney Council is considering closing several primary schools due to low enrollment. This decision aims to tackle financial issues caused by a significant drop in student numbers.

Hackney: The council is looking at closing some primary schools soon. They’re facing a tough situation with fewer kids enrolling. This has put a strain on school budgets.
On January 27, the Cabinet will discuss the closures. They’re considering shutting down St Mary’s, St Dominic’s, Oldhill Community, and Sir Thomas Abney Primary Schools. Some students would move to nearby schools that will expand to accommodate them.
In October 2024, Hackney had 23% of reception spots empty. This drop in numbers means less funding for schools. It’s a real challenge for them to provide quality education.
Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, the Deputy Mayor, expressed how hard this decision is. She mentioned that many schools are struggling due to these financial pressures. They’re trying to find long-term solutions together.
She also noted that schools with empty spots have less money to support students, especially those who need extra help. The council believes these proposals are necessary to protect education in Hackney.
If the closures are approved, there will be a 28-day period for public comments. A final decision will be made in April 2025, with changes starting in August 2025.
