St George’s Hospital in Tooting plans a new renal unit to enhance kidney care for patients in South London and Surrey
Tooting: A South London hospital is gearing up to launch a new centre for kidney patients. St George’s Hospital is looking to revamp its renal services, which could be a game-changer for folks in South West London and Surrey.
If the plans get the green light from Wandsworth Council, the new renal unit will combine services from St George’s and St Helier Hospital in Sutton. This move aims to boost care and dialysis options for kidney patients.
According to the application, the current renal units are struggling due to years of underfunding. The buildings aren’t up to scratch, and the services could definitely be more efficient.
The proposed unit would rise on a former car park, a spot made famous by the show 24 Hours in A&E. It’s set to be a six-storey building with 89 beds, including special wards for different needs, plus 24 acute dialysis stations and even a courtyard garden for staff and visitors.
The new centre aims to bring together expert staff in one place, allowing for round-the-clock care for patients needing long-term dialysis or more complex treatments like kidney transplants. It’s also expected to open doors for clinical trials and better data collection on effective treatments.
Council officers are backing the project, saying it’s a much-needed boost to healthcare in Wandsworth. The Planning Committee will make the final call on January 14.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy from the trust to upgrade the hospital’s facilities over the next decade. If approved, this renal unit will kick off the first phase of the plan.
