Newham’s council has given the green light for a developer’s plan to convert two buildings into student accommodation. This project will provide 457 beds and various communal spaces for students.

Newham: Exciting news for students! The council just approved plans for a new student accommodation project. This will transform two buildings at Royal Albert Dock into a vibrant living space.
These new student blocks will house 457 students. They’ll have study areas, fitness rooms, and even some retail space on the ground floor. Plus, a covered walkway will connect the two buildings.
The development includes 210 studios and various cluster rooms. There will also be 160 affordable rooms and spaces for those with disabilities. The goal is to create a car-free environment, with plenty of bike parking available.
Interestingly, the existing buildings were mostly empty. The developer, RAD CHP, aims to breathe new life into this area. They’re also contributing £100,000 for improvements to nearby Beckton Park.
During the consultation, most feedback was positive. Supporters believe this project will enhance the local community. However, some residents raised concerns about how students and locals will coexist.
Councillor Susan Masters expressed that the financial contribution might not be enough to bridge the gap between students and residents. The developer acknowledged this and is looking for ways to foster community connections.
After discussions, the committee voted unanimously in favor of the plans. This isn’t the first project for RAD CHP; they previously received approval for another student block nearby.
Students are expected to move into the new accommodation by September 2026. It’s an exciting time for Newham, and we can’t wait to see how this develops!
