Bexley: The council had asked for a proper look at how the new tunnel charges would affect the local economy before they were set in stone.

But TfL went ahead and approved the charges during their December meeting, making only a few tweaks to their original plan.

The council is worried that these charges, which only give discounts to low-income folks, will really hit household budgets hard and hurt small businesses that depend on vehicles.

Plus, the £1 discount for local businesses doesn’t even apply to Bexley.

Councillor Richard Diment, who’s in charge of neighborhoods, expressed frustration, saying, “This is another kick in the teeth for our residents and small businesses.”

He added, “We need a better deal and for the area that gets resident discounts to include Bexley, especially since we lack decent public transport options.”

“We’ve been pushing for improved transport links and more investment in public transport, but it feels like we’re being ignored again.”

Starting April 7, 2025, TfL will start charging drivers who use the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels.

For cars, motorbikes, and small vans, the off-peak charge will be £1.50, going up to £4 during peak times if you pay with Auto Pay.

Large vans will face a £2.50 charge off-peak and £6.50 during peak hours, while HGVs will be charged £5 off-peak and £10 during peak times with Auto Pay.

The council’s worries will be on the agenda at the transport subcommittee meeting on January 15.
